A Monday night fire at a vacant house in Attapulgus appears to be an arson.

The call went out about 10:30 pm for the fire at 211 So. Main Street.  Attapulgus volunteers arrived quickly and found the house fully involved in flames.  Decatur County Fire and several other county volunteer units also responded.

The old wood in the house continued to burn and kept firefighters on scene for several hours.

Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Justin Bedwell spoke with owner Fred Sims.  He stated that power, gas and water had been disconnected the previous day as it was being prepared to be moved off the property.

Sgt. Bedwell then spoke with Robert Lee Mills who was clearing the lot and preparing to move the house.  Mr Mills told Sgt Bedwell there was nothing in the house that would start a fire.

Sheriff's Investigator Melanie Woods was called to the scene.  The state fire marshall was also alerted to the suspicious circumstances for his investigation.
