A Bainbridge Memorial Hospital registered nurse has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of acquiring controlled substance by fraud. Marjorie D Smith was arrested by BPS Investigator Mark Esquivel.
Investigator Mark Esquivel was notified by Bainbridge Memorial and Manor Risk Manager Jan Bennett regarding a fraudulent prescription last Wednesday. He reported that Wal-Mart Pharmacy had called Doctor Ovidiu Popa's office regarding their concern of the validity of a controlled substance prescription for her daughter Tiffany Smith.
Investigator Esquivel received a statement from Dr. Ovidiu Popa stating that neither Marjorie Smith nor her daughter Tiffany Smith had ever been patients of Dr. Popa. Dr. Popa also stated he has never written a prescription for either of them and that the handwriting and the signature on the prescriptions were not his.
Inv. Esquivel viewed Wal-Mart surveillance video of Marjorie Smith dropping off the prescription and picking up the prescriptions at Wal-Mart.
Inv. Esquivel checked other Bainbridge pharmacies and learned that there had recently been 10 similar prescriptions filled and obtained by Marjorie Smith. All 10 prescriptions were for Roxicet 5/325 which is an oxycodone, a Schedule II narcotic. The dates of the prescriptions;
