Decatur County Sheriff's Department and Sheriff Wiley Griffin are National Award winners for their community involvement and dedication to highway safety.
The International Association of Chiefs of Police Law Enforcement Challenge judges departments of similar size across the entire country. Decatur County Sheriff's Department won 2nd place in their category of 26-35 Deputies.

Deputies regularly participate in the Southwestern Traffic Enforcement Network promoting highway safety. The Governor's Office of Highway Safety statewide is a program where each month a road check is set up for highway safety. They were here in Decatur County in July. In August, deputies participated in the Hands Across the Border along with the State of Florida.
Child Passenger Safety Seat Installation and Enforcement is accomplished within the Traffic Enforcement Network and traffic enforcement. The Department also works closely with the local Health Department and have 3 deputies certified in installation.
Captain Cecilia Willis regularly visits schools, churches, PTA's and any organization she may in order to educate the public. Seldom does a week pass when Captain Willis is not addressing a group on identity theft, internet child safety, or another critical area of public concern.

The Sheriff's Department will be at Wal-Mart this Saturday providing fingerprinting kids, child safety seat installation information and bicycle safety information. Captain Willis said last week they fingerprinted over 100 kids and hope to top that number again this Saturday.
