The Weekend Storm

With over 10 inches of rain and gusting winds, Bainbridge and Decatur County suffered through the weekend.  Thousands without power and blocked roads from flooding and trees were the norm.  Even Highway 84 east was flooded and completely closed by DOT overnight.

On Friday night, Public Safety continued to run for transformers sparking and on fire.  Live wires down trapped the occupants inside their car for over an hour in a local parking lot.  Sparking wires setting on a home put a fire unit to watch it closely for an hour plus.

Trees down and across busy roads not only received a quick Public Safety response, but the 8-10 Pubic Works employees worked through the weekend, including all night Friday, to clear what they were able to.  Many times the downed trees were intermingled with live wires so they could only stand by and wait for Georgia Power.

About 1 am Friday night, fire struck a home on Avenue B.  Firefighters worked to find the areas that continued to smolder.  They were forced to tear into several walls and ceilings to extinguish the fire.  Fires are typically watched throughout a night for a re-start.

Shortly after 3 am, officers walked through the home to check it thoroughly and found no fire.  When the home was found totally engulfed in flames at about 4 am, suspicious origin crossed their minds.
