A crash on Highway 253 south on Wednesday afternoon trapped the driver under his vehicle, completely hidden from view.
The situation created an anxious few minutes for Deputies and first responders arriving on scene until they were able to get a response from the victim. Volunteers and Decatur County Fire and Rescue worked feverishly for about 15 minutes to free the driver.
Lonnie McDaniel, 30, of Donalsonville was traveling north on Highway 253. As he approached the curve at the intersection of Ten Mile Still Road, his vehicle left the roadway.
Georgia State Trooper Sgt Marc Godby stated Mr McDaniel appeared to have over-corrected. His Kia swerved to the middle of the road and in turning back towards his lane lost control. The vehicle went into a spin crossing the divide at Ten Mile Still and continued straight ahead towards the wooded area.
Leaving the roadway, the car flipped a couple of times and came to a stop about 30 feet into the woods totally hidden from view. As someone suggested, if this crash had occurred in the middle of the night, it would have been possible that he would have remained there for many many hours.
Rescue jacked up the vehicle, placing blocks to secure it, and was able to slide Mr McDaniel from under the car. Life Flight was called, but after he was removed from under his car, it was determined his injuries were not as serious as feared and not life threatening. EMS transported him to the hospital.
State Trooper Sgt Godby stated alcohol was involved and charges are pending.
