At about 2:30 am on Thursday night, Officer Tom Foster caught up with a pickup that had sped away from him. The driver finally stopped and fled on foot.
A speeding pickup passed Officer Foster on Butler Ferry Road who turned around and proceeded to Dothan Road. The vehicle had already made it to the top of the Flint River Bridge headed east on Dothan Road. The vehicle turned north on Broad Street at what appeared to be an excessive rate of speed. Thomas Dixon, the driver, turned east on Back Street, north Clay and then to Cemetery Street. He ran the stop sign at Clay and Cemetery Streets and turning east on Cemetery Street.
Dixon sped through the stop signs at Cemetery and Webster, Cemetery and Independent where he turned north on Independent Street. At that time the officer activated his lights and when he failed to stop his siren. Continuing to run stop signs, he turned west onto Clayton Street into Shelton Street then east on Beech Street. Running several more stop signs and several more turns and then he stopped at Cherry and Nussbaum Streets.
Dixon then jumped out of the truck and fled on foot with the officer on foot behind him. He ran several blocks and headed behind a house at Nussbaum and Maple Street. After chasing him around the house, Dixon finally realized the officer was not giving up so he did.
During this whole time, his male passenger in the back of the pickup was certainly holding for dear life. The other passengers in the truck with Dixon just stayed where they were as Dixon fled from Officer Foster.
Even with the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, Thomas Dixon refused to take a DUI test. An opened pint of gin was found behind the driver's seat and the truck was towed.
Thomas K Dixon, 26, was charged with DUI refusal, reckless driving, fleeing/attempting to elude, open container, failure to maintain lane, disregard stop sign and resisting arrest. He was transported to Pelham City Jail.
