With the ongoing discussion of crime in Bainbridge, City Manager Chris Hobby distributed to City Council the following information on our crime statistics. The statistics are from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) database for the most recent compiled year-2009.
Mr Hobby's report stated;
An analysis of Bainbridge's crime rates for 2009 (as recorded in the FBI database) revealed the following:
| Category |

These numbers show that the City of Bainbridge has a crime rate that is statistically relative to our population. Of the 8 recorded crimes, Bainbridge has 4 that are ranked lower than our population rank (Murder, rape, motor vehicle theft and arson) with 3 of those 4 ranking over 40 spots lower than our population.
The remaining four categories are within 15 spots of our population ranking with the highest being aggravated assault at 47th. If we analyze the aggravated assault category, we find that the 15 ranking spots represent a 6% increase above our population.
In other words, aggravated assaults place us 6% higher than we should be for a city our size. This is most likely an indicator of the City charging most cases as aggravated assault instead of simple assault in order to effectively prosecute the criminal.
Comparing the 2009 numbers to data from the last quarter of 2010 (our most recent data available), we find the following:
Crime Number Yearly Average
Robbery 5 20
Larceny 129 516
If the projections hold true, we would see a decrease of 25% in robberies (our most prevalent violent crime) and an increase of 3% in larceny (our most prevalent property crime). Detailing the larceny data, we find that 37 of the 129 (28.6%) crimes occurred on Highway 27 South and another 22 of the 129 (17%) occurred on Shotwell Street, our two major commercial corridors.
We pulled the following numbers from the FBI data for Georgia cities with a population of 11,000 to 13,999 and includes a per capita rate. See chart of all Georgia Cities for Violent Crime.
