Beginning in February 2006, for up to a year, the welcome center will host several artifact displays for the Decatur County Museum during a renovation period.
At left, Jim Lillethun, Museum Curator, tells Mary Jo Dudley about the dugout canoe.
It is what may be the best preserved dugout canoe in the southeast. It is judged to have been made in the late 1700's or early 1800's in the style of an Indian dugout.
(As of April, 2008, the canoe and indian artifacts continue to be displayed. The Decatur County Museum still has no home. The Museum and the Arts Council could not reach an agreement to house the Museum at the Firehouse Gallery.)
