It's About Life Choices
The birth rate for girls ages 15-17 in Decatur County is 53.9 per 1,000 births. The births to unmarried females in Decatur County is 60 percent compared to Georgia’s 42 percent. The national report, Making a Love Connection, noted that “Such high levels of teen pregnancy not only disrupt the lives of teens themselves; they also contribute to the persistence of maternal and child poverty, father absence and diminished life prospects for the children who are born to teenagers.” To bring awareness of the issue and provide information to help youth and adults make positive lifestyle choices, the Decatur County Family Connection Collaborative, through a grant, will be presenting conferences, workshops and literature to the area. |

Have A Childhood
Have a childhood before a child. Abstinence education is much more than "just say no." It is reality-relationship education. Building healthy relationships is foundational to the message of abstinence until marriage. Unhealthy relationships have physical and emotional consequences. Understanding relationships and how to build them (developing true intimacy) is key to character issues of respect, honor, and commitment. Understanding sexual progression is also necessary in order to establish boundaries in relationships. Abstinence-until-marriage education teaches the elements and skills needed in a healthy marriage. While the realistic limitations of condoms and contraception are included in abstinence education programs, step-by-step instructions on how to use contraception and condoms is omitted. The goal of abstinence education is to convey the expected standard of waiting to have sex. Giving "how to do it" instructions defeats and weakens the message. |

The Physical Risks
Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI)About 19 million new cases occur each year in the US; half are young people under the age of 25. Some STIs make getting pregnant when you want to hard. Others cause warts, painful blister, some types of cancer or death. For some of the STIs there is NO cure and can spread without symptoms. Pregnancy You could get pregnant or get someone preganant. Over 800,000 teens get pregnant every year. Being a teen mother or father makes it hard to finish school or keep a job. Unmarried teen moms are also less likely than other teens to ever get married. |

The Emotional Impact
The physical risks of early sexual activity are real but that isn't the whole story.Sex is a powerful, intimate act and young people who have sex often experience emotional difficulties. |
