Sister Sues Gold Cross Ambulance Service, Others, Alleging Negligence
Jan 24, 2017

A lawsuit has been filed by a woman whose ill brother was mistakenly transported some 300 miles to Bainbridge and back again after he was discharged from an Augusta hospital.

The Augusta Chronicle reports

The Richmond County Superior Court lawsuit was filed January 17, 2017 by Mary B. Terry as the administrator of the estate of Johnny Lee Bryant who died on Feb. 10, 2015, from sepsis and pneumonia. The defendants are Gold Cross, Dr. Hetal Thakore and Doctors Hospital. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of negligence, the cause of emotional distress and wrongful death.

According to the lawsuit, Bryant, 54, was sent from The Place nursing home to Doctors Hospital (Augusta GA) where he was treated by Thakore for sepsis and pneumonia from Jan. 8 to Jan. 15, 2015. Bryant's medical condition included end-stage renal disease, diabetes, stroke, malnutrition and numerous pressure sores.

When discharged from the hospital, the lawsuit contends, Bryant's blood pressure was low, his pulse elevated as was his white blood cell count. At about 6 pm Jan. 15, 2015, when instead of being sent back home to The Place, he was transported by Gold Cross to a nursing home in Bainbridge, more than 300 miles away. Once there, the nursing home refused to accept Bryant.

The lawsuit alleges Bryant spent more than 12 hours in an ambulance sick and in severe pain and was treated with nothing more than aspirin. Meanwhile, the lawsuit contends, Bryant's sister kept trying to find out what happened to him and came to the conclusion he had died.

Shortly after Bryant was returned to Augusta he was transported to University Hospital where he was admitted and died on Feb. 10, 2015.
