Decatur County 4-H'ers Attended Senior Camp

Georgia's 4-H summer camping program, administered through the county offices of UGA Cooperative Extension, offers a 4-H summer camping experience unparalleled in the nation.

Over 8,000 children ages 9-19, accompanied by over 1,000 adult and teen leaders, annually descend on each of Georgia's unique 4-H centers for a week of camp that will be reflected upon and cherished for years to come. Each camp offers great adventure, friendship and fun, and all seek to develop the camper's Head, Heart, Hands and Health.

Senior Camp for high school 4-H'ers took place at Rock Eagle 4-H Center from May 29-June 2, 2017. Decatur County 4-H'er, Savannah Padgett attended Senior Camp with over 300 high school 4-H'ers from across Georgia. In addition to community service, fun and fellowship, senior campers attended educational classes on the UGA Athens campus.

Decatur County 7th grade 4-H'ers Thomas Neal and Diamond Sigman attended Junior Camp from June 5-9, 2017 at the newly built Camp Jekyll facility on Jekyll Island. Some of the activities they enjoyed included coastal ecology classes, boat tours, maritime forest exploration and historical bike tours. Plus, Junior campers visited the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and the local water park.

Thomas Neal also attended Wilderness Challenge Camp at Wahsega 4-H Center in Dahlonega July17-21, 2017. Highlights of the week included the zip line canopy tour and white water rafting on Tennessee's Ocoee River. Lots of educational classes, sports and night recreation rounded out the adventure in Georgia's gold region.

Georgia 4-H summer camp provides 4-H youth opportunities in understanding and navigating group dynamics, self-discovery, relationship building, practicing healthy personal habits, and appreciation of the environment. The mission of all Georgia 4-H programming is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills and forming attitudes that will enable them to become productive society members.
